Build a Balloon Car and Race to the Finish! Science Fair Project

balloon car design

The more air in the balloon, the more kinetic energy and the faster or further your car will travel. The Engineering Design Process (EDP) is a respected process for solving engineering and other critical thinking challenges. Students will learn and practice transferable skills involving creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking. In this activity, students work individually or in small groups to design and construct a balloon-powered vehicle that meets design criteria designated by the teacher. They use Tinkercad 3D modeling software to create a custom body that includes a base, balloon stem holder, wheel mounts and other optional features for steering, holding items, etc.

Materials:

Trace the shape of the bottle top onto the roof, making sure that it is centered. Lightly score the fold lines on the “window, bonnet & grill” template. Now gently fold the cardboard on all these lines. Mark the window section so you know which side is glued to the roof.

Step 6: Reflect

Then there started to be more public safety action and presence. The day progressed, there was more threat of discipline. The students became informed that if they continue to stay, they will face potential academic sanctions, potential suspension. And there was no clearer embodiment of that than what had happened that morning just as President Shafik was going to testify before Congress.

Step One – Making the wheels & axels

This means that if an object A pushes another object B with a certain amount of force in one direction (action),  object B will put the equal force on A, but in the opposite direction (reaction). When the air stored in the balloon rushes out through the narrow opening in the straw, it exerts a force on the car (action). The car, in its turn, exerts an equal and opposite reactive force and is propelled forward.

The engineering goal in this project will be to design, build, and test a car that is powered by nothing but a balloon. You want to design your car so it can travel as far as possible. For the ultimate test, you can follow a strict set of design rules used in the 2015 Engineering Challenge (see the Procedure for details). But back on campus, some of the students and faculty who had been watching the hearing came away with a very different set of conclusions.

What are the key concepts learned in this easy and cool science experiment?

This is the same principle used in real and massive vehicles, rockets, and jets that shoot a high-speed stream of gases out the back of their engines, propelling the vehicle forward. The science behind the Balloon-Powered Car is so simple but impressive. When the inflated balloon is released, the air from the balloon rushes in to the straw because of the pressure created.

How else can I make a balloon powered car?

We use simple machines for many things everyday of our lives. The results are also in accordance with the law of conservation of energy. The potential energy stored in the balloon, is converted into kinetic energy when the air rushes out of it, causing the car to move. Small plastic bottle caps or any round structure, like candy mints with a central hole or CDs, can also serve as car wheels.

Step 16: Congratulations!

That’s the way the Jewish students interpreted it. The encampment is set up in the middle of the night slash morning, prior to the hearing. And so what effectively happens is they caught Shafik when she wasn’t on campus, when a lot of senior administration had their resources dedicated to supporting Shafik in DC. Isabella says that this was just the beginning of a really tense period between student protesters and the University. After those two student groups were suspended, campus protests continued. They asked that the University divest from businesses that profit from Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The potential energy inside the balloon is converted to kinetic energy, or energy of motion, of the fast-moving air through the opening. Because the air is pushed out rapidly backwards, there is a reaction force that pushes the balloon forward, as shown in Figure 3. This principle comes from Newton's third law of motion, which states "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." The main purpose of performing the balloon powered car experiment is to prove and learn Newton’s Third of Motion in a practical and fun way. This means we are going to learn about an equal and opposite reaction. In this experiment, when the air pushes back, the propelling force is created against the outside pressure of the air which makes the car move forward.

Of course, California has been influencing auto designers for decades thanks to the Art Center, just north of downtown L.A. But Dave Stollery, president of Industrial Design Research, laments this turn of events. He was the initial designer hired by Toyota Motor Corp. to develop Calty Design Research in 1973.

And this is not representative of the vast majority of the protesters in the encampment, who mostly had been peaceful. They would later hold a Seder, actually, with some of the pro-Palestinian Jewish protesters in their ranks. But those videos are reaching members of Congress, the very same Republicans that Shafik had testified in front of just a few days before. And now they’re looking and saying, you have lost control of your campus, you’ve turned back on your word to us, and you need to resign. There’s a video that goes viral of one of them shouting at Jewish students, go back to Poland, go back to Europe.

When the balloon is inflated it stores the compressed air as potential energy. When you let the air out of the balloon, the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy; this is the energy of motion or thrust, which is why the car moves. Because the air is pushed out rapidly backwards, there is a reaction force that pushes the car forward.

Tape one piece of card to the side of your car, attaching the tape to the straws. Bend the card round to create a corner, and tape this into place. Repeat this step to create the other side of the car. Fold the points of card inwards and tape into position.

But we don’t know when these standoffs are going to end. We don’t know if students are going to leave campus for the summer. And at each of these institutions, there’s presidents and deans, just like President Shafik at Columbia, who are facing a really difficult set of choices.

This is a university that has both one of the largest Jewish student populations of any of its peers. But it also has a large Arab and Muslim student population, a big Middle Eastern studies program. I’m a producer with “The Daily.” Just walked out of the 116 Street Station. It’s the main station for Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus.
